Though links were initially used to provide useful information to the visitors to a website, over a period of time, they have been used by search engines to determine the importance of a particular website. The greater the number of websites linking to a website, the higher its ranking in the search engines as they often equate links to the importance of a website.

Not all websites have the same amount of weight age in linking. Links from older and more established websites , educational institutions and  government websites are considered more important.

To reach a particular web page a person has to type the URL of the web page he or she wishes to visit. This can be tedious as typing the address can be a time consuming process. Also if the address is incorrectly typed (even by a single character), the internet user will be taken to a completely different and unrelated page. In the early days of the internet, browsers were not sophisticated and many users used this method, also known as direct navigation to reach the website of their choice.

A link allows a visitor to directly reach a web page by clicking on it is directly. This is very convenient for the user as he or she does not have to type in the address. However, the website where the link is provided, should hyperlink properly , since clicking broken links can deter the visitor from checking out the rest of the website.
